BISHOPBRIGGS' ELLIE (6) IS A BMX RACE CHAMP

RONA CONGRATULATES YOUNGSTER ON OUTSTANDING SUCCESS

A young Bishopbriggs girl is making a name for herself as a BMX race champion at the tender age of just six-years-old.

Ellie Robertson, is the only Scottish female “expert level” competitor in her age group, and often competes with BMXers twice her age.

The Wester Cleddans Primary School pupil has won a string of trophies this year, including first place in the Scottish Regional BMX Series 2023 and the North Region Series (England) 2023, and third place in Round 1 of the British National BMX Series 2023.

Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP Rona Mackay was so impressed she put forward a motion at the Scottish Parliament congratulating Ellie on her outstanding success in the sport, and also commended her big brother Jamie for inspiring her to compete.

The local SNP MSP presented Ellie, who is a member of Cumbernauld Centurions BMX Race Club and Jamie (9) who excels in mountain biking, with the framed motion when she met up with them and proud mum and dad Sandy and Don recently.

Jamie qualified for Scottish Cycling’s Race the Worlds 22023 Under 12 mini-DH final in mountain biking, where he came in sixth place.

Ms Mackay praised Ellie for being a role model to encourage young girls into the sport, adding: “What an achievement at such a young age. Ellie has an amazing future ahead, I am sure, along with big brother Jamie who is a force to be reckoned with in mountain biking.

“I would like to congratulate them both on their success, and to their proud mum and dad Sandy and Don for their devotion and enthusiasm to help Ellie and James succeed.”

Mum Sandy said: “We’re touched that Rona put forward a motion congratulating Ellie on her achievements. It will help promote BMX and encourage other girls to take up the sport.

“Jamie is also a star in his own right, qualifying for Scottish Cycling’s Race the Worlds Under 12 Mini-DH final at only nine-years-old.”
