CALL FOR BISHOPBRIGGS COVID VACCINATION CENTRES

MSP and MP write to health board for localised vaccination care

Calls for Bishopbriggs to have a community COVID-19 vaccination centre have been backed by local MSP Rona Mackay and East Dunbartonshire MP Amy Callaghan. The SNP politicians have written to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde healthboard following concerns from constituents seeking guidance on the community approach to the vaccination rollout.

In their letter, the East Dunbartonshire representatives cites concerns for the 70-74 age cohort, many of whom rely on public transport to attend their appointment. With the flu vaccination rollout in Bishopbriggs taking place annually at the War Memorial Hall, and the Leisuredrome currently lying vacant, residents have expressed concern that useable venues based within the community are being overlooked during the rollout. Commenting, Strathkelvin and Bearsden MSP Rona Mackay said: “I have been contacted by a number of constituents within Bishopbriggs seeking a more localised venue for their COVID vaccination. Whilst I’m delighted they are all seeking to get their jag as soon as possible, I would hope we can provide this more locally within the community where possible. “For the annual flu vaccination, the Bishopbriggs War Memorial Hall is used and we have other venues, such as the Leisuredrome, which are readily available for my constituents. “Whilst this is the biggest vaccination rollout in the history of our NHS and these venues may not be suitable, I’m more than happy to seek answers for my constituents and await the reply to our letter from the healthboard.

Commenting, SNP MP for East Dunbartonshire Amy Callaghan said:

“It’s vitally important that everyone, when offered, gets their COVID vaccination. The jag is our best way out of this pandemic, keeping our communities and my constituents safe. “Alongside Rona, I’m hopeful that we can seek further clarity from the healthboard on the vaccination centres being used, placing a priority on localised venues for those who need them most. “It’s great news that East Dunbartonshire already has several mass vaccination centres. As the programme ramps up in scale and scope, it’s important the healthboard make centres as community based as possible – especially for those in rural parts of my constituency - making it easier for all those who need a jag to get a jag.
