MSP Rona Mackay has spoken of her delight at the Scottish Government’s fracking ban.
Paul Wheelhouse, Cabinet Secretary for Energy, made the announcement after a moratorium and lengthy consultation with communities.
A motion will now be tabled to vote on the SNP government’s position after the autumn recess.
Ms Mackay said:
“I am absolutely delighted the SNP government has banned fracking with immediate effect.
This has been a policy I have long supported and campaigned for.
“The fact is, the SNP government has taken a cautious and evidence-based approach to banning fracking, and it is simply too big a threat to our environment, infrastructure and public health.
“Residents in East Dunbartonshire, and indeed across Scotland, will be able to breathe a sigh of relief fracking will not be taking place beneath their homes.
“Energy companies, whose only concerned is to rake in profits, will not be allowed to tear apart the beautiful Scottish countryside.
“Communities have made their voices heard loud and clear over fracking, and today the Scottish Government stands side-by-side with them.”
