CELEBRATING SUCCESS IN STRATHKELVIN AND BEARSDEN

MARKING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF CONSTITUENTS

One of the highlights of being an MSP is helping to celebrate the achievements of my constituents.

A way I can do this is to raise a special motion at the Scottish Parliament to recognise local success.

Last week it was the turn of a well known and popular bakery in Kirkintilloch to do the constituency proud.

Peter’s Bakery at Merkland Drive came away with two trophies at the 2023 World Championship Scotch Pie Awards. As well as being crowned the home of the best apple pie in Scotland, the local firm took the bronze award for their delicious steak and haggis pies. This is a fantastic achievement for a much loved local business and all credit to their hard work and dedication.

As well as award-winning local firms, we have a wealth of wonderful community groups in Strathkelvin and Bearsden.

The National Lottery Awards For All Scotland recently awarded significant funding to Twechar Community Action for a three-year community project which will see activities for all within the group’s healthy living centre to support the mental and physical wellbeing of local people. Local group Families of Auchinairn Coming Together (FACT) who supported the area’s most vulnerable residents during Covid, will also benefit from funding. The group now provide a range of family activities as well as helping older people facing social isolation.

Congratulations also to Lenzie Academy pupils in securing lottery funding to create a commemoration area to honour and remember pupils and staff who have sadly passed away.

Our schools are so central to the wellbeing of the community. I welcome a feasibility study being progressed for a new £23 million primary school, library and community hub at Westerton in Bearsden. The prospect of a new school is an exciting one which would see significant investment and improvement in the area, and the local community will be fully consulted. Myself and my colleague Amy Callaghan MP look forward to hearing the views of constituents.

My constituency office is open 9.30am-4.30pm Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays. My team can help with any issue on 0141 776 1561, or email rona.mackay.msp@parliament.com for a surgery appointment.
